Two of Associate Professor Dr. Michael Decker’s advisees, Raisa Echols and Rebecca Davenport from the MS Medical Physiology (MSMP) program and the Center for Aerospace Physiology, were selected for internships for the summer of 2019. The internships, through the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP), American Society for Engineering Education in Washington, D.C. are designed to provide opportunities for students to participate in research at a participating Navy laboratory. NREIP interns are selected based upon academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and career and research interests.
Raisa Echols received the Office of Naval Research (ONR) internship and will be based at the Naval Medical Research Unit in Dayton, Ohio (NAMRU-D), located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Ms. Echols had volunteered in Dr. Decker’s lab as an undergraduate student and then went on to enroll in the MSMP program. She has been accepted into the Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP) and will be based in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Her emerging interests include aerospace physiology and mechanisms conferring resilience or vulnerability to extreme environmental conditions encountered by high altitude aviators.
Rebecca Davenport also received an NREIP internship and will spend this summer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, Florida. She is currently enrolled in the MSMP program with a long-term goal of developing a career in aerospace physiology.
