2014 Recknagel Symposium
Sept. 19, 2014
Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland

The Department held the 2014 annual Recknagel Symposium at its 13th Annual Retreat at the Cleveland Convention Center on Friday, September 19. Four second year doctoral students presented their research.

Peyvand Amini (l) and Michael Glidden (c) shared the award for best academic record and David Litvin (r) took first place in the research presentation category. The title of David's presentation was “Central Indomethacin treatment following bleomycin induced lung injury attenuates breathing frequency & reduces brainstem IL-1B expression.”

During the first year of doctoral training, students in the Department rotate in three different laboratories. The goal of these rotations is to identify a subject area of interest, and a mentor for future research. After completion of the research rotations, each student presents one of the projects to the entire department at the Recknagel Symposium.

Professor Richard Recknagel was Chairman of Physiology from 1976 to 1986. He was an admired thinker and investigator who took a keen interest in mentoring young students and faculty. In his memory, the Department established this Symposium.
